My most memorable Behrend Experience was when I got the opportunity to go to the speaker series that featured the first female referee in the NFL, Sarah Thomas. I got the chance to ask her advice on if she had any advice for young women going into sports business, and the Athletic Director on campus was in attendance and heard me ask my question. Later that week, I was working a sporting event as normal and the Brian Streeter, our athletic director pulled me aside and asked if I had a job for any summer employment. When I let him know that I did not, he offered me a full-time position in the athletic office working with him and the Sports Information Director on promotions and social media for the next year. I got my dream campus job all from asking one question, and I got it in my first year of my education.
My immediate answer to this question will always be... GET INVOLVED!! I was so nervous when I first started college that I would have a hard time making friends or standing out among my peers coming from a small high school where everyone knew my name. The first piece of advice I received as a prospective student here was to get involved, and then I heard it close to a thousand more times, but I cannot express how thankful I am for that advice because it truly did change my life. Joining clubs furthers your skills in whatever you're interested in and even allows you to make friends with people who have the same thoughts and passions as you, some of my best friends right now came from the decision to join clubs.
My favorite place on campus is the Commuter Lounge in the Smith Chapel. I am one of the Commuter Assistants there and work with the coordinator and one other assistant to plan events and make the lounge a cozy and safe space for commuters. When I am not working, I still spend a lot of time there because it is a nice quiet place to study and relax and sometimes even make new friends!
I chose Penn State Behrend unexpectedly. I had aways had this school in the back of my mind as somewhere I wanted to go but I got accepted elsewhere. Life got crazy and I ended up backing out of the other school and coming to tour Behrend in August of the year I was starting school. I had great conversation with some business professors and students and within the next few days I was a Behrend Lion. From the moment I stepped foot on to this campus I felt like I was at home and that I belonged here, I never got that feeling anywhere else.
